sampler size: 20” x 20¼” • framed size: 17¼” x 17½” • price: $950

This is a perfectly delightful, unfinished sampler with a highly unusual subject depicted in the lower register – a large dog leashed to his dog house. A little man enters the scene far left. The center register presents a house, a wrought iron fence and gate and the outline of tree. Both the large house and the dog house have the blue slate roof commonly found on Scottish samplers. The word, “FAVOUR” is likely the beginning the of verse that appears regularly on samplers made in the United Kingdom and the United States: “Favour is deceitful and Beauty is vain but a woman that feareth the Lord she shall be praised. In classic Scottish fashion, the maker included a list of family initials. A tightly worked Greek key border provides an excellent framework.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition, conservation mounted into a molded and black painted frame.
