Coat of Arms Needlework,
Coat of Arms Needlework,
Austria, circa 1830
This is a very small needlework panel presenting a splendid coat of arms and while we don’t know the family name, the images and their heraldic meanings are interesting. Stags represent purity, dogs are faithful guardians, antlers embody strength and fortitude. The large crown that sits atop the shield informs us to the family’s success – this is the source of the phrase “crowning success.” The work is extremely tight and fine and may have been that of a professional needlewoman.
Worked in silk on the linen, this retains its original silk binding. It is in excellent condition and as has been conservation mounted into a rosewood veneer frame.
