Amongst the “plain” or practical sewing techniques taught to needleworkers, the making of buttonholes stands out as one of the most visually interesting. Samplers that demonstrate proficiency in this regard surface occasionally; they are generally miniature in size with several precisely rendered buttonholes that vary in their color and placement.

This small, yet eye-catching example displays fourteen polychrome, decorated buttonholes surrounding the initials MLT, which is enclosed in its own decorative framework. A blue stitched edging along the top and red stitched edging along the bottom complete this little sampler nicely.

Worked in silk on cotton, it remains in excellent condition with very minor foxing to the cotton and is presented in a beveled veneered frame.
