The third quarter of the 19th century was a period in which pictorial needlework flourished, as some ladies, after learning to make samplers as schoolgirls, continued their craft by making decorative needlework for their Victorian homes. The maker of this splendid piece clearly had an eye for composition and a steady hand to complete such a delicate piece with precision.

Silk, chenille and wool stitched onto linen scrim form a lyrical and organic composition, featuring birds with long tails and a basket bursting with flowers and vines. Incorporated into the design are many tiny metallic beads, which give a certain luster to the piece, as well as three larger beads which are pinned in place and feature as the birds’ eyes. This is in excellent condition with some very minor wear, conservation mounted and in a later frame.
