Ann Waite,
England, 1809
Ann Waite worked her exceptionally fine, large sampler in an oval format, not an easy feat. A highly developed depiction of a tropical bird on a tree dominates the pictorial elements and Ann centered her name and date in the lower portion of the oval, nestled between two more subdued exotic birds perched on leafy branches. This particular verse, a version of the Golden Rule, is an appealing one that can be found on other samplers. A couched chenille oval serves as an outline leading to the outstanding border of various flower blossoms on graceful leafy vines, joined at the bottom with a ribbon bowknot.
The sampler was worked in silk and chenille on wool and the needlework is in excellent condition. There is a small triangular piece of linen, just under the bowknot, that may have been set in by the samplermaker, or is a later repair. It has been conservation mounted and is in its fine, original frame. The gold painted mat dates circa 1900.
