The image of Adam and Eve under the apple tree with a serpent winding up its trunk is universal in its appeal and can be found on countless English samplers. This delightful presentation was stitched by E. Taylor, circa 1810. Adam and Eve, with their dark hair and rosy cheeks, look quite cheery as they comingle with flowering plants and perched birds; each with one arm raised as if presenting the tree. A vining border frames the composition closely on all four sides, adding to its strength, and a light blue outer border nicely completes Miss Taylor’s work.

Worked in silk on wool, it is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted into a black painted, molded frame.
