1950s freeform Poole pottery in modernist painted designs.

Starting out as a tile manufacturer in the 19th century, the Poole company developed outstanding glazing techniques and interesting forms. In the 1950s, after the wartime restrictions were lifted, and the British were once again allowed to manufacture decorative pottery, the company flourished, bringing back some forms developed in the 1930s and creating beautiful new ones, as well as striking, hand-painted designs.

This pitcher in Feather Drift pattern by Alfred Read, 1953-1954. Slip casted, white earthenware tableware form. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or crazing.
